Your concrete will be ready to walk on within 24-48 hours, but full strength takes 28 days regardless of weather. Newcastle’s humidity actually helps the curing process, but our hot summers can cause surface drying too fast – that’s why I always tell customers to keep their concrete moist for at least 7 days by misting it or covering with wet hessian. In winter, curing takes a bit longer to start but you won’t have the rapid surface drying issues we get in January and February. Yeah, we can supply smaller loads, but I’ll be straight with you – it’s not always the most economical option because we still need to send a truck and driver. For anything under 1 cubic meter, you’re better off looking at our premix concrete bags that you can mix yourself, or seeing if you can combine your order with a neighbor who’s doing work. That said, if you need fresh mixed concrete delivered and you’re happy to pay the small load fee, we’ll absolutely do it – I’ve delivered 0.5 cubic meters for a single set of steps plenty of times. For a standard driveway, you’re looking at 100mm thickness, so a single car driveway that’s 3 meters wide by 6 meters long needs 1.8 cubic meters. House slabs in Newcastle typically run 100-125mm thick depending on your engineer’s specs and soil classification, so a 150 square meter slab needs roughly 15-18 cubic meters. I always tell customers to add 5-10% extra because excavations are never perfectly level and you don’t want to run short mid-pour.
